Vodo di Cadore

In the valley of the Boite stream, at 910 m above sea level, it is located Vodo di Cadore, between the Dolomite massifs of Pelmo and Antelao, less than two hours’ drive from Venice. The area where it stands is also called ‘ Oltrechiusa‘, because it is located upstream of the ‘Chiusa’ fort of Venas di Cadore. Vodo enjoys an excellent geographical position that sees it close to the ski resorts of Cortina d’Ampezzo and San Vito di Cadore and, at the same time, lying along a quiet green valley shore. The town is also known for being the birthplace, in 1845, of the founder of the Gazzettino newspaper, Gianpietro Talamini, whose home is located along the main street and to whom the refuge on the slope of Mount Pelmo, at an altitude of 1,582 m, is dedicated.

The sports that can be practised in this area range from mountain biking, where the ‘La Lunga Via delle Dolomiti’ cycle route remains a favourite with Italian and foreign guests, to hiking in summer, with trails of varying levels of difficulty. Hiking in summer and snowshoeing in winter are numerous: you can reach the Ciauta plans, the Talamini refuge, the Venezia refuge, the Becco di Cuzze. From the hamlet of Vinigo, it is possible to reach the old mill, along a simple, flat road, or follow the more demanding paths to the Galassi and Antelao refuges, rejoining Altevie 4 and 5.

And, after an intense day of sport, it is impossible not to be won over by the flavours of the mountains: the restaurant culture is in fact an element that distinguishes Vodo, making it a destination for refined palates.

A hamlet of Vodo di Cadore is the small village of Peaio, which is famous because the ice cream cone was invented right here, by Italo Marchioni who emigrated to the USA before 1896, the year in which he began using rounded wafers to serve ice cream in his ice cream parlour. He obtained a patent on 15 December 1903 for a mould to produce cup-shaped wafers, with which he produced the prototype cone. Today, it is possible to visit, in the Piazza della Mole in Peaio, along the cycle path and near the chieda and the wooden mill wheel, the copper monument celebrating the ice cream cone. The author, Diego Imperatore from Vodo, has depicted, next to the large cone, the stylised image of Marchioni, who looks at some pieces of flat waffles, placed at his feet, and thinks about the invention of the cone.

From the hamlet of Peaio you can reach Vinigo, a splendid ‘ terrace on the Dolomites‘. Vinigo has considerable historical interest thanks to its “Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista”, a national monument under the control of the Venetian Superintendency, in which we find the main altar with an altarpiece attributed to Francesco Vecellio. The altarpiece depicts the Madonna and Child between Saints John the Evangelist and John the Baptist. Vinigo is also known for its unique typical product: cabbage, which is cultivated by the inhabitants of Vinigo in the social field located in the centre of the village. Here, in fact, each family owns a plot with several crops.
